Governance

Gildredge House opened in 2013 and is non-profit making and state-funded. As a Free School, we are aspirational in setting high standards and have specific freedoms, for example, over the curriculum, school day and terms, staffing and budget. However, the school will still be subject to the same Ofsted inspections as all maintained state schools.

The Board of Governors sets and safeguards the school ethos of high expectations for the behaviour, progress and attainment of all students in the school, and for the conduct and professionalism of both staff and Governors. The Board also sets the strategic direction and objectives of the school. Governors will systematically monitor performance against agreed targets and performance indicators, ensuring that the school provides a high quality and effective learning experience for all students.

Our core responsibilities as Governors can be summarised as:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Board of Governors

In a Free School, the governance structure has two layers: Members of the Gildredge House Free School Trust, with their own specific responsibilities, and the Board of Governors, where each person fulfils the role of Governor, Director and Trustee.
