Mid-Morning Snack

The children will have time in the morning to have a drink of water and a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables. The children may bring in a fruit or vegetable snack from home. Please remember that nuts and nut products (e.g peanut butter) should never be sent into school due to allergy concerns. The children are not allowed to share food items for this reason.

Children should not bring in items from home as they often get lost or broken. The children are not permitted to use their mobile phone, if they have one, during the school day. Mobile phones must be switched off and handed to the Class Teacher until the end of the school day.

Lunchtime

Children in Years 5 and 6 can purchase a hot school meal or you can provide your child with a healthy packed lunch. Please refer to the Healthy Lunchbox and Snack Policy [PDF] The children will eat their meal in the company of their peer group and staff.

Health

The health and well-being of the children in our care is very important to us. If your child has been prescribed medication that needs to be administered during the school day, please complete a Request for School to Administer Medication Form [PDF] and hand both the form and the medication to a member of staff in the Primary School Office. We are unable to administer non-prescription medication such as Calpol. Please refer to the Administering Medication Policy for further information.

If your child has a minor injury, this will be dealt with by one of the Primary staff. A record of first aid given will be noted and the parents will be informed as necessary; a copy of the record will be retained in school. Parents will be contacted immediately if there are any concerns for a child’s health or well-being.

Young children who are feeling unwell are often best resting at home. Children should not come to school if they have a sore throat, a heavy cold or an infectious skin condition as they will not be able to learn effectively. In addition, in accordance with the Department of Health guidelines, children who have suffered from vomiting and / or diarrhoea must remain at home until 48 hours after the last incident.

Parental Support

Parents often ask how they can support their child so that he / she settles in quickly to his / her new routine. The quicker your child can become independent, the more confident he / she will become.

Top Tips for Happy Confident Learners

Ready to Learn:

  • Please ensure your child has sufficient sleep (10-12) hours; and
  • Ensure that they have breakfast and a drink before school.

Daily Routines:

  • Have a calm morning routine;
  • Leave straight away when you have said goodbye to your child;
  • Be on time to collect your child to prevent him / her becoming anxious;
  • Encourage your child to dress and undress independently; and
  • Give your child responsibility for organising and carrying their own book bag.

Home Support

  • Develop a regular homework routine, supporting your child so that you are learning and sharing together;
  • Take ten minutes to sit quietly with your child to practice their sounds / hear them read; and
  • Read a bedtime story to them, even when they are competent readers.

Communication

Each child has a regulation Gildredge House black rucksack to carry the small items they need to and from school. Children also have a Home-School Contact Book which parents should use for easy communication between home and school. The Class Teacher will check these daily and parents are asked to do the same. Please keep the Class Teacher informed of any changes which may affect your child.

Please ensure your contact information is kept up-to-date so that you can be contacted in an emergency and also so that you receive important reminders and information via email. This can be done using EduLink or by notifying the Primary School Office staff of any changes. Parents will receive information via EduLink on a weekly basis about their child’s activities in class.

We like to foster strong links between home and school. At this stage in your child’s school career, this is often done by talking to the Class Teacher on an informal day-to-day basis. Occasionally, a more formal conversation may necessary, in which case an appointment should be made with the Class Teacher.

We have a duty of care for all our students and your child’s happiness is paramount. If your child is unhappy for any reason, please inform his / her Class Teacher as soon as possible. Most problems can be easily resolved if we know about them. If your feel your issues are not being addressed, please refer to the Complaints Policy.

Reporting to Parents

Parental consultations will take place in both the Autumn and the Spring Terms. This will be an in-depth discussion about your child’s progress. In addition, a summative report will be written by your child’s Class Teacher in the Summer Term, which will identify your child’s progress towards their next steps for learning.

We look forward to a happy and productive year ahead.
